Kitchen Cabinet Painting — The Smart Alternative to a Full Kitchen Renovation
Kitchen cabinet painting gives your kitchen a brand-new look at a fraction of the cost of a full renovation.
A complete kitchen gut-and-replace in Toronto runs $30,000 to $60,000 or more. Professional kitchen cabinet painting delivers a similar visual result for roughly $4,000 to $9,000 — saving you tens of thousands while keeping your existing layout, countertops, and plumbing exactly where they are.
At Royal Home Painters, kitchen cabinet painting is not a side service. It is our specialty. We have been spray painting kitchen cabinets across Toronto and the GTA for over 15 years. We use Renner Coating & Benjamin Moore — a waterborne alkyd that dries to a hard, factory-smooth finish built to handle daily kitchen use.
Every kitchen cabinet painting project we take on comes with a 5-year written workmanship warranty, $5 million general liability insurance, full WSIB coverage, and a background-checked crew.

Our Kitchen Cabinet Painting Process
How We Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets — From Old to Brand New
Kitchen cabinet painting done right is not just slapping on a coat. It is a multi-step process that determines whether your finish lasts 2 years or 10+. Here is exactly how we do it.
1
Free In-Home Kitchen Cabinet Estimate
We visit your kitchen, count every door and drawer, check the cabinet material, and discuss your colour and finish preferences. You receive a detailed written quote within 24 hours.
2
Colour Consultation & Cabinet Planning
Included at no charge. We help you choose the right kitchen cabinet painting colour based on your countertops, flooring, lighting, and personal style. No guessing, no colour regret.
3
Door Removal & Kitchen Protection
Every cabinet door and drawer front is labeled, removed, and taken off-site for spraying. Your kitchen floor, countertops, appliances, and backsplash are fully masked and protected.
4
Sanding, Cleaning & Priming
Every surface is sanded to create proper adhesion. Grease and grime are cleaned with TSP. Grain can be filled on oak doors upon request. A bonding primer is applied to ensure the topcoat grips and lasts. This step is why cheap cabinet jobs fail — and ours do not.
5
Spray Application — Two Coats
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts receive two spray-applied coats of Renner, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane. Face frames and cabinet boxes are hand-brushed or sprayed on-site. No drips. No brush marks. Factory-smooth.
6
Reinstallation, Hardware & Final Walkthrough
Once fully cured, doors are reinstalled with new or existing hardware. We align every door, adjust every hinge, and do a full walkthrough with you. We do not leave until you are completely satisfied with your new kitchen.
Cabinet Type Expertise
Kitchen Cabinet Painting for Every Type of Cabinet Material
Not all cabinets are the same. Each material requires a different prep approach, primer, and topcoat system. After painting thousands of kitchens across Toronto and the GTA, we know exactly what works — and what does not.
OAK KITCHEN CABINET PAINTING
Oak is the most common cabinet material in GTA homes built between 1990 and 2010. The heavy grain telegraphs through paint unless it is properly filled first. We use a professional-grade grain filler (On Request), sand smooth, prime with a bonding primer, and apply two coats for a flat, modern finish — painting oak cabinets is one of our most requested services.
MAPLE & BIRCH CABINET PAINTING
Maple and birch have a smooth, tight grain — ideal for kitchen cabinet painting. These are the easiest cabinet materials to get a flawless finish on. We lightly sand, prime, and spray two coats. The result is smooth, even coverage that looks and feels like new factory cabinets.
MDF CABINET PAINTING
MDF doors absorb moisture at the edges — especially around the sink. We seal all edges before priming and painting. With the right prep and the right paint, MDF cabinets take colour beautifully and produce some of the smoothest kitchen cabinet painting results we deliver.
MELAMINE & THERMOFOIL CABINET PAINTING
Most painters refuse to paint melamine cabinets because they are slick and non-porous. We use a specialty bonding primer designed for melamine and thermofoil surfaces, followed by two topcoats. Peeling thermofoil edges are removed and prepped before painting for a clean, lasting result.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting Stories From Our Recent GTA Projects
OAK-TO-WHITE KITCHEN CABINET TRANSFORMATION — RICHMOND HILL
This Richmond Hill homeowner had dark-honey oak cabinets installed in 2003. The kitchen felt dated and cramped, even though the layout was perfectly functional. They got a quote for full cabinet replacement — $38,000, including demolition and countertops.
We completed their kitchen cabinet painting project for a fraction of that. We filled all the oak grain, sprayed everything in Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117), installed new brushed-nickel pulls, and had the kitchen ready in 5 days. The total came to almost $9,000. That is the power of professional kitchen cabinet painting done right.
Our kitchen turned out better than new. Amazing service and attention to detail. Very accommodating and they were able to deliver on time. We loved their work so much that we had them also do our basement kitchen. Masood treated the project like it was his own kitchen.

TWO-TONE KITCHEN CABINET PAINTING — MAPLE CUSTOM HOME
A Vaughan couple with a large custom kitchen wanted a modern two-tone look — white uppers and navy blue lowers. The contractor they originally hired quoted $55,000 for new cabinets. Their existing boxes and layout were in great shape.
We removed all 42 doors, sprayed the uppers in Gray Owl (OC-52) and the lowers in Hale Navy (HC-154). New soft-close hinges were installed.
Total cost was under $20,000 — and the result looks like a $60,000+ renovation. This is the kind of kitchen cabinet painting project we love.
I cannot thank Royal Home Painters enough for their excellent job painting and finishing my kitchen cabinets. The finishing at the end of the work made a huge difference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Kitchen Cabinet Painting FAQ — Answers Toronto Homeowners Need
Kitchen cabinet painting cost in Toronto depends on the number of doors, drawer fronts, the cabinet material, and the scope of prep work required. Most GTA homeowners pay between $4,000 and $9,000 for a full kitchen cabinet painting project. Larger kitchens with islands, pantries, or 40+ doors may run $9,000 to $14,000+. We provide detailed written estimates at no charge — usually within 24 hours of our in-home visit. Read our full kitchen cabinet painting cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
Yes — kitchen cabinet painting is one of the best-value home improvements you can make. A full cabinet replacement in Toronto costs $25,000 to $60,000+. Professional kitchen cabinet painting delivers a similar visual result for roughly 70–80% less. If your cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you like your current layout, painting is the smart choice. You get a brand-new look without the weeks of demolition, dust, and disruption.
We use Renner or Benjamin Moore — both are waterborne alkyds that dry to a hard, factory-smooth finish. It resists chipping, yellowing, and daily kitchen wear better than standard latex paint. On certain projects, we also use Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane. All are low-VOC, safe for your family, and built to withstand the heat, moisture, and grease that kitchens produce every day. Read our guide on the best paint for kitchen cabinets.
Most kitchen cabinet painting projects take 4–7 days depending on the size of your kitchen and the number of doors. Doors are removed on Day 1 and taken off-site for spraying. While they cure, we prep and paint the face frames and cabinet boxes on-site. Doors are reinstalled once fully cured. You will have partial use of your kitchen throughout most of the process — we keep disruption to a minimum.
Yes. Oak cabinets have a heavy grain pattern that shows through paint unless it is properly filled. We apply a professional-grade grain filler, sand smooth, prime with a bonding primer, and spray two topcoats. The result is a flat, modern-looking finish that completely hides the grain. Painting oak cabinets is one of our most-requested services in the GTA.
Yes. Every kitchen cabinet painting project comes with our 5-year written workmanship warranty. If the finish chips, peels, or shows defects within 5 years, we come back and fix it at no charge. No questions. No runaround. We also carry $5 million in general liability insurance and full WSIB coverage for every crew member.
Kitchen cabinet painting is a colour change on your existing doors and frames. Kitchen cabinet refinishing goes further — it includes surface repair, grain filling, chip and edge repair, and sometimes staining instead of painting. Refinishing is ideal when your cabinets need more than just a fresh coat. Both services produce beautiful results. We will recommend the right approach during your free estimate.
Yes. Most painters avoid melamine and thermofoil because regular paint will not stick. We use a specialty bonding primer designed for non-porous surfaces — it creates a strong mechanical bond that holds the topcoat in place. For thermofoil cabinets with peeling edges, we remove the loose material and smooth the surface before priming. Read our full guide on painting melamine cabinets.
In 2026, the most popular kitchen cabinet painting colours in Toronto are soft whites like Benjamin Moore Decorators White (CC-20) and White Dove (OC-17), warm off-whites like Swiss Coffee, and two-tone combinations — white uppers with navy, sage green, or charcoal lowers. Greige tones like Revere Pewter remain popular for a warmer modern feel. We help you choose the perfect shade during your free colour consultation.
